Shreeya Wasunkar, PhD candidate
Q1. Could you briefly introduce yourself and your professional background?
My name is Shreeya Wasunkar, and I am currently pursuing a PhD in Health Systems Medicine at Seoul National University College of Medicine. I completed my undergraduate studies in Dental Sciences in India, which helped build my foundation in healthcare and biomedical sciences. Later, I pursued a Master’s degree in Public Health and Biostatistics at the Graduate School of Public Health at Seoul National University.My academic and research experiences have allowed me to develop strong interests in medical research, public health, and data-driven healthcare approaches. Before starting my PhD, I also worked as an associate researcher at SNU Medicine, where I gained valuable research experience and further strengthened my passion for academic research.
Q2. How did you learn about SNU Medicine’s Graduate Program and what motivated you to apply for the PhD program?
I first learned about SNU Medicine during my time working as a medical researcher at Seoul National University College of Medicine under the guidance of Professor Sohn Hoon. During that experience, I was able to closely observe the university’s strong research environment, advanced facilities, and collaborative academic culture.Working as a researcher at SNU Medicine gave me valuable hands-on experience and further strengthened my interest in scientific research. Through this journey, I realized that I wanted to deepen my knowledge and contribute more independently to the field, which ultimately motivated me to pursue the PhD program at SNU Medicine.
Q3. What has been the most valuable experience during your graduate program at SNU Medicine?
One of the most valuable experiences during my graduate program has been the opportunity to bring together my diverse academic background in Dental Sciences, Public Health, and Biostatistics into my research work. Being able to apply knowledge from different fields while continuously learning from fellow researchers and colleagues has greatly expanded my perspective as a researcher.In addition, having the opportunity to represent SNU College of Medicine at the Union TB Conference 2025 in Copenhagen was a particularly meaningful experience. Attending the conference allowed me to engage with researchers and professionals from around the world, exchange ideas, and gain deeper insights into global health and tuberculosis research. It was both an important learning experience and a valuable opportunity for professional growth.
Q4. In your view, what distinguishes the SNU Medicine Graduate Program from others in Korea and elsewhere, in terms of academic curriculum, campus life, mentorship from the faculty, and others?
I believe SNU Medicine stands out because it provides a highly diverse and global academic environment. The program offers students the opportunity to work with leading researchers not only from Korea but also from across the world, which creates a very collaborative and internationally oriented research atmosphere.At the same time, studying at SNU Medicine also provides valuable insight into the Korean healthcare and public health system. Through research, academic discussions, and collaboration with Korean researchers and clinicians, students are able to better understand Korea’s public health challenges and research approaches.The combination of global exposure, advanced research opportunities, and strong mentorship from faculty members makes the SNU Medicine Graduate Program a unique and enriching experience.
Q5. What is the most important thing that you have so far gained during your time at SNU Medicine, in terms of knowledge, skills, perspectives, and network?
Along with academic and research experience, one of the most important things I have gained during my time at SNU Medicine has been personal growth and self-improvement. My journey at SNU has helped me evolve and become a better version of myself, both professionally and personally.Through working in a diverse and challenging research environment, I have developed greater confidence, adaptability, and communication skills. I have also learned how to collaborate with people from different academic and cultural backgrounds, which has broadened my perspective significantly.In addition, the mentorship, friendships, and professional networks I have built during my time at SNU Medicine have been incredibly valuable and will continue to influence my future career and personal development.
Q6. What has been the most memorable personal moment in Korea?
One of the most memorable moments of my life in Korea was graduating with my Master’s degree from Seoul National University and later being given the opportunity to return to SNU Medicine, one of the leading medical institutions in the country, to continue my academic journey. It was a very proud and meaningful moment for me, both personally and professionally.Another very memorable experience for me was when my parents visited Korea for the first time. Being able to show them Seoul and share my life here with them felt incredibly special. It was a proud moment to introduce them to the city that had become like a second home to me, and the memories we created together made the experience even more meaningful.Along with these achievements, the time I have spent with my fellow researchers, colleagues, and friends has made my experience in Korea truly unforgettable. The friendships, shared experiences, and memories we created together are definitely moments worth cherishing forever.
Q7. Any messages you would like to share with future prospective students interested in SNU Medicine’s graduate program?
I would encourage future students to be open to new experiences and challenges. Studying at SNU Medicine is not only an opportunity to develop academically but also to grow personally and professionally in a global environment.The journey may sometimes feel demanding, but the experience, mentorship, and opportunities you gain are truly worthwhile. If you are passionate about research and eager to learn, SNU Medicine can provide an excellent platform for your future career.

My experience at SNU Medicine has been transformative both academically and personally. Being part of such a dynamic and supportive research community has inspired me to continue pursuing meaningful scientific contributions and personal growth.I would also like to personally thank Professor Sohn Hoon Joon for being an incredible mentor throughout my academic journey so far.
